Vanadium-based SCR catalysts, using V₂O₅ as the active component, are a mature and cost-effective solution for NOx reduction in diesel exhaust. They are especially effective in medium-to-high temperature ranges (300–400°C), providing robust performance for heavy-duty diesel applications and stationary sources.
The catalyst carrier can be ceramic or metal, designed to withstand high temperatures and corrosive exhaust gases. TiO₂ serves as the coating support, with vanadium embedded as the primary active component. V-SCR catalysts facilitate the standard SCR reaction efficiently but require careful thermal management because V₂O₅ can volatilize above 450°C, and vanadium has certain biological toxicity. Despite these considerations, V-SCR catalysts remain a proven technology for reliable NOx reduction in diesel after-treatment systems, particularly in applications where operating temperatures are consistently within the optimal activity range.
