A noble metal DPF catalyst is a composite aftertreatment component that integrates high-efficiency oxidation functionality with particulate trapping capability. It is primarily applied in diesel power systems designed to meet China VI, Euro VI, and higher emission standards. The core design concept involves uniformly coating the porous DPF substrate surface with a catalytically active layer containing noble metals—mainly platinum (Pt) and palladium (Pd), sometimes supplemented with small amounts of rhodium (Rh)—to achieve low-temperature soot oxidation and nitrogen oxide conversion.
The substrate of this type of catalyst is typically made of cordierite or silicon carbide (SiC). By precisely controlling porosity and wall thickness, the design ensures excellent gas permeability and catalytic reactivity while maintaining mechanical strength. The mechanism of noble metals operates in two principal ways: first, by promoting the oxidation of NO in the exhaust to NO₂, enabling continuous soot oxidation at lower temperatures; and second, by directly facilitating the reaction between oxygen and soot, thereby accelerating the combustion rate of particulate matter.
Compared with non-noble metal catalytic systems, noble metal DPF catalysts are characterized by high catalytic activity, a wide operational temperature window, and fast regeneration response. These features make them particularly suitable for urban driving conditions with frequent exhaust temperature fluctuations and for heavy-duty transportation vehicles.
To enhance durability, this type of catalyst generally employs high-surface-area γ-Al₂O₃ as the washcoat material, combined with rare-earth oxide stabilizers to resist high-temperature sintering and sulfur/phosphorus poisoning. Typical applications include premium passenger vehicles, construction machinery, and heavy-duty diesel trucks.
